Full iPad Mini Event Wrap-Up

NuttGuy October 24, 2012

So this Apple event was pretty standard, almost exactly what we thought it was going to be. That is except for a huge surprise that Apple through our way.

At the beginning of the event Tim Cook did his usual thing by introducing how well Apple has been doing lately. He started with the device that Apple has most recently released, the iPhone 5. Tim Cook talked about how the device sold out in a weekend followed by showing a video displaying the iPhone 5′s release. An awesome screenshot from that video is below.

Tim Cook then broke down iPod sales, 3 million since the refresh, and how this new set of iPod’s is the best ever. Then Mr. Cook broke down iOS 6 talking about how it’s the fastest adoption rate of a mobile operating system ever. Along with how well Mountain Lion and iOS 6 are built to work together, such examples include iMessages and Documents in the cloud, of which there are 125 million according to Apple’s stats. Tim Cook broke down more iOS 6 features and how amazing they are. Then Tim Cook broke down the new app store stats, downloads, how many, all of which have not changed since the last media event. THEN we got to the new stuff.

The first thing to be announced what a new iBooks update, update 3.0. The first new feature in iBooks is continuous scrolling, just needing to flick in order to go onto the next page you do not need to actually flip the page, which has never really worked as well as it should. You can also share to FaceBook or Twitter if you highlight a passage that you really like. Also in the new iBooks you get Korean and Japanese translation for those who are reading around the world. This is all available right now you can go update your iBooks right now. Next up is the Mac.

Tim Cook broke down Mac stats and how it has outgrown the PC like crazy and it holds it spot in the market due to customer reliability. Mr. Cook then had Phil Schiller come out and introduce the new Macs. The first Mac Phil introduced was the new 13 inch MacBook Pro, with Retina Display. This is very similar to the 15 inch MacBook that was announced a few months ago just smaller and only 1.5 pounds. I added this extra picture below just to show how amazing this display is, this is the MacBook compared to a 1080p television you would find in someone’s home.

Doesn’t that just blow your mind? Phil went on to talk about how there has never been a laptop this small that gave pro photographers this kind of capability. Phil then went onto talk about the other features on this laptop including FaceTime HD camera, dual mics, and stereo speakers. You can choose an i5 or i7 processor and up to 8GB of RAM,  and a whopping 768GB of storage — SSD of course, awesome for a laptop that size. It has started shipping today so go preorder yours and wait on that list forever. Next is the Mac Mini.

No big surprises here Apple just upgraded the parts to fit with more modern processors, hard drives, USB 3.0, HDMI, Bluetooth 4.0, the whole works. Then came the big one in the Mac family, the iMac.

At it’s thinnest, the iMac is only 5 mm thin 8% thinner than the previous generation. They made it so thin in fact they had to use a new kind of welding in order to ensure it was secure, this kind of welding is known as friction stir welding. The new iMac is also fully laminated in order to give the graphic an amazing look, like they are on top of your display in fact. Coupled with an HD Facetime camera and stereo sound this Mac has a great set of features. Specs are either i5 or i7 processor, Four USB 3.0 ports, up to 3 TB of storage, but wait there is more on storage. Apple has created the Fusion Drive, part HDD part SSD. 128GB SSD and up to 3TB HDD Fused together with software, it’s all one drive though. Core applications and OS stays on the SSD, documents stay on the HDD. Now here comes Tim Cook with iPad news.

Tim Cook brought us up to speed on iPad figures and what all the iPad has done, talked about how the iPad has gotten its footing in schools as an amazing learning tool and has rocked the world of tablets as a whole. Then brought Phil back up to talk about a new iPad. This was diffidently the shock of the evening in my opinion. I know I didn’t expect an iPad 4 and Apple did a good job of keeping it a secret. But this isn’t a big change, and in my opinion is more of an iPad 3S. It has an A6X processor which is the same as the iPhone 5 but with a little more to handle the Retina Display on a big screen. Same 10 hour battery life, some new LTE providers, slightly faster WiFi, and of course Lighting connector. With the slight add of a Lightning to SD card cable. But wait there is more on the iPad front.

Yes that is right the iPad mini is official. The major advantage is that it is plenty small to be able to hold it in one hand comfortably. It’s as thin as a pencil at 7.2 mm thick, and only weighs 0.68 pounds. Black and White versions but much closer to the look of the iPhone 5 especially in the Black, very good-looking no doubt. 7.9 in. display but has the same resolution as the iPad 2, major disappointment that it isn’t a Retina display. All iPad apps work on it flawlessly no developer work necessary. A5, LTE versions, FaceTime HD camera, 5MP iSight camera around back. Apple also added smaller Smart Covers that don’t need a metal hinge, very cool looking. It starts with a 16GB of storage, and will be priced at $329. Pre orders start this Friday WiFi versions start shipping November 2nd. Now back to Tim.

Tim Cook then thanks everyone at Apple for all their hard work and ends the media event there. Pretty good event lots of surprises and I’m sure some pissed off iPad 3 owner, me included. But all around Apple did its traditional thing and I’m sure they will be pleased with their sales figured. The iPad mini is also a great example in my opinion that Apple has the creativity to make new product lines outside of the ones they already have. Hopefully we see more of that from Apple in the future.
