How to use Siri with Google Maps (No Jailbreak)

NuttGuy December 20, 2012

For those who frequent the use of Siri in order to get directions while on the road you probably found it disappointing that even after Google Maps for iOS was released you are still stuck using Apple Maps. Now you can remedy that and actually use a good Maps application with Siri. Click after the break for more details.

The process is actually pretty simple you just need to know an extra command that is already built into Siri. All you need to do is follow the steps below and you’ll be using Siri to get directions again in no time.

Step 1: Invoke Siri by pressing and holding the home button just like you always do.

Step 2: Give Siri your voice command asking for directions to wherever you are going. All you need to make sure to do is add the command via transit to make this work. For example you could say “Give me directions to Target via transit” or the example I put in the screenshot above.

Step 3: By adding via transit has Siri pull up a list of apps installed on the device with Mapping abilities. Siri also shows apps on the App Store that have Mapping abilities that you could download.

Step 4: For this we want to use Google Maps so just select Google Maps from the list. The query then gets transferred from Siri to Google Maps where it will calculate your route.

This process is not exactly seamless or perfect but it does the job while Apple restricts Siri to just use the default Maps application. I suppose the choice is between taking a couple extra steps or being lost in Australia for a couple of hours.

Also there seems to be a glitch where the query needs to be an exact address or certain localities, if you keep it to general then it displays the results in Apple Maps. For example if you say “the local swimming pool via transit” then that is to general and it will display via Apple Maps.
